NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE (NYS) KICK STARTS THE THIRD BATCH OF CORPS MEMBERS ENLISTMENT PROCESS
Welcoming the first 200 of the over 1000 applicants to the third batch of prospective Corps Members interview process at the National Stadium Hostels, the Director of Programmes, Recruitment and Training, Sylvester Bewei expressed delight over the enthusiasm demonstrated by the applicants. Mr Bewei informed them about the number of applications submitted for the November 2020 enlistment and called on them to put on their very best during the interview to impress the panel of judges to earn the opportunity to be enlisted into the NYS Scheme. Director Bewei then presented the first set of Prospective Corps Members to the Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director and staff of NYS. In his opening statement, the Executive Director of the National Youth Service (NYS) Mohamed Onanah Jalloh called on the applicants to remain steadfast and focus on their dreams of a national service to their country and people. The NYS Executive Director explained the importance of national service to one’s country and the responsibilities that come with. “Some of your colleagues are going to view your voluntary national service as gross stupidity but that, with time, they would wish they had also volunteered to enlist and serve” Mr Jalloh noted. He, however, warned against involvement in actions that has the potential to put the applicants in harm's way during and after their service year. ''Do not allow to be used by politicians; be conscious of your dreams and avoid issues that may trivialise your very existence", the Executive Director warned. Mr Jalloh further admonished them against involvement in criminal activities including theft, misconduct and other social vices during the orientation and service period stressing that violators will be dealt with accordingly. He urged all applicants to take advantage of the Scheme and make better use of the opportunities the orientation course would avail to them to develop their abilities for the good of all. “At the NYS we are a team and so we believe in team spirit and selfless attitude. That is one of the things we are here to help you develop.” The Executive Director told the applicants. He explained how the NYS Scheme was established to foster National Unity for the development of the nation and her people; hence, the need for every would-be Corps Member to be ready to serve as a development ambassador and also advocate National cohesion irrespective of tribal, religious and other differences. Mr Onanah Jalloh urged the applicants to be prepared to serve as decent role models and goodwill ambassadors in the communities and institutions they may be called upon to serve in. He further stressed on the need to keep a clean record and avoid actions that would adversely affect their future endeavours. The NYS Executive Director concluded by reminding the applicants about how much the Sierra Leonean society is counting on NYS and its Corps Members to redefine the history of the nation positively. The interview process is expected to last for a week. NYS COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT
